Ale zacznę tradycyjnie po polsku o filmie “Etereas” duetu The Flaminguettes, który całkowicie podbił serca hulahoopujących internautów, w tym moje. Od internetowej premiery minęło już kilka miesięcy, a film zaliczył ponad 199 tysięcy obejrzeń na Vimeo i zgarnął kilka nagród na festiwalach filmowych oraz tytuł Video Roku od Hooping.org. Na pewno wszyscy z Was, drodzy hooperzy już go widzieli (choć nie ulega dla mnie wątpliwości, że razem ze mną obejrzycie go ponownie!), dlatego że dla czytelników Hulajduszy będzie specjalna niespodzianka – wywiad z Danielą Villanuevą i Marą Soler z Mexico City, autorkami obrazu. Była już o nich mowa, bo pisałam o projekcie Hoola Hup, zainicjowanym przez The Flaminguettes właśnie (przeczytacie o nim tutaj). Kiedy zobaczyłam Etereas po raz pierwszy, nie mogłam oczu oderwać od tańczących linii, kształtów i gwiazd, w mojej głowie nagromadziło się milion pytań i ogarnęła mnie totalna euforia – że oto oglądam coś, co w tak piękny sposób łączy obie moje pasje – film animowany i taniec z hula-hoop! Od paru lat pracuję w studiu animacji i proces powstawania filmów animowanych jest mi szczególnie bliski. Napisałam więc do autorek z prośbą o wywiad, a one odpowiedziały: “tak”. Zatem przedstawiam Wam Danielę i Marę, The Flaminguettes oraz Etereas! Zobaczcie:
Daniela i Mara poznały się w studiu animacji, gdzie wspólnie pracowały nad filmami reklamowymi. Mara studiowała projektowanie graficzne, a Daniela – media i film. Oprócz zamiłowania do animacji przyjaciółki dzieliły pasję do hula-hoop. Kiedy zaczynały kręcić – Daniela przed 5 laty, a Mara dwa lata później, hulanie było praktycznie nieznane w Meksyku. Podczas pierwszych warsztatów Hoopvention, z gwiazdą światowego formatu – Brecken Rivarą, wreszcie zaczęła kształtować się hulahoopowa społeczność Mexico City.
Ja: Skąd wziął się pomysł na Etereas?
Mara: Podczas występów LED i fire hoop na Hoopvention siedziałyśmy z Danielą i innymi uczestniczkami, wpatrzone w podświetlone obręcze. To było to! Gdy Brecken prezentowała przed nami niesamowite sztuczki, powiedziałam do Danieli: “Spójrz na te kształty! Mogłybyśmy to zanimować!”, a ona na to: “Taaaak, o tym samym właśnie myślę!”.
Jako animatorki stale analizujemy ruch, zawsze kiedy uczymy się nowego tricku lub po prostu ćwiczymy z obręczami, w wyobraźni wizualizujemy kształty i figury geometryczne, które możemy “narysować” w powietrzu używając hula-hoop. Mimo że upłynęło kilka lat od pierwszego impulsu do zrobienia filmu, nigdy nie przestałyśmy o nim myśleć. Zrobiłyśmy wiele eksperymentów, na przykład fotografowałam Danielę z hula-hoop, a potem analizowałyśmy jej ruchy. Rysowałyśmy na tych zdjęciach nasze wizualne odkrycia, to w jaki sposób obręcz się porusza, jak łączy się z ciałem, przestrzenią, i tak dalej.
Od czego zaczęłyście produkcję? Od Tiany i Brecken? Muzyki? Wyboru miejsca?
Jedno było pewne, w filmie musiała wystąpić Brecken! To od niej wszystko się zaczęło, kiedy kreśliła ósemki w przestrzeni. Tak po prostu miało być! Ale musiałyśmy poczekać na odpowiedni moment. Dopiero dwa lata później pojawiła się szansa, by skontaktować się z Brecken ponownie, opowiedzieć jej o idei filmu i pokazać nasze eksperymenty wizualne. Zaprosiłyśmy ją na kolejne warsztaty i zapytałyśmy, czy chce wystąpić w naszym filmie. Była zachwycona projektem i zarekomendowała go swojej nowej przyjaciółce, również zafascynowanej geometrycznym kręceniem – Tianie Zoumer. Od razu wiedziałyśmy, że chcemy je obie w filmie. Linie Tiany z hula-hoop są bardzo silne i ostre, obręcz wchodzi w interakcję z nią samą. Przeciwnie do Brecken, której hulanie jest miękkie, zaokrąglone, i współgra przede wszystkim z przestrzenią. To była idealna para do naszego filmu!
I tak się zaczęło. Zrobiłyśmy listę kształtów, które chciałyśmy zobaczyć, sztuczek, które nam się podobały i innych elementów, charakterystycznych dla nich jako hooperek. Narysowałyśmy storyboard i listę ujęć, rozpoczęłyśmy poszukiwania lokacji do zdjęć. Wiedziałyśmy, czego chcemy. Delikatnych kolorów, wysokich sufitów, czegoś naprawdę wyjątkowego. Nie było łatwo, ale znalazłyśmy je!
Muzyka pojawiła się na końcu. Chociaż montowałyśmy i animowałyśmy film w rytm muzyki, była to inna piosenka, przykładowy kawałek z mocnym bitem, który nam odpowiadał. Wiedziałyśmy od początku, że muzyka musi być oryginalna i wyrazista. W ostatniej fazie projektu miałyśmy przyjemność pracować z dwoma najlepszymi DJ-ami w kraju, Julianem Placencia i Teen Flirt. Zrobili kawał dobrej roboty! Efekt przerósł nasze oczekiwania.
Jak długo trwała produkcja? Co było w niej najtrudniejsze?
Prawie trzy lata i było to naprawdę ogromne wyzwanie! Każda część produkcji była trudna, ponieważ większość animacji była tworzona ręcznie, klatka po klatce. Nie miałyśmy żadnych funduszy, pracowałyśmy dla własnej satysfakcji. Musiałyśmy więc prosić o pomoc przyjaciół i czas wolny poświęcić pracy. Ostatnie sześć miesięcy było szczególnie trudne. Żadnych weekendów, przyjaciół, chłopaków, rodziny! Tylko komputery, hula-hoopy, i my. Po prostu… standardowa praca animatora, tylko że bez żadnych przerw. Ale cały czas dobrze się bawiłyśmy. Nie zmieniłybyśmy niczego.
Pracujecie teraz nad nowym projektem z udziałem Marawy The Amazing. Uchylicie rąbka tajemnicy?
Pewnie! Uwielbiamy pracować z hula-hoop i za każdym razem, kiedy próbujemy czegoś nowego, przychodzą nam do głowy świeże pomysły! Praca nad Etereas dała nam mnóstwo nowych idei, które mogłyśmy testować, postanowiłyśmy więc je wykorzystać w nowym filmie krótkometrażowym. Ten film będzie się koncentrował głównie na ciele, bardzo nam się podobają ruchy Marawy i jej nastawienie na zabawę. Ona naprawdę jest niesamowita (czyli Amazing) i po prostu cudowna. W zeszłym roku sfilmowałyśmy ją, kiedy była w Meksyku i teraz szukamy funduszy na zrealizowanie animowanej produkcji. Na pewno będzie świetnie! Bardzo chcemy zobaczyć efekty jak najszybciej!

As the original interview was made in English and I’m happy to share with the world this precious conversation, here is the second language version, something for hoopers and animation fans (as myself)! Enjoy!
What is your filmmaking and hooping background?
Well, Mara studied Graphic Design and I studied Media & Film. We met at my first job, an animation studio that did a lot of publicity. We definitely become friends and fell in love with the animation world. But later on, we followed different paths and founded two different animation studios. Llamarada de Petate and Viumasters. Friends and rivals, working in a mostly men environment and seeing each other only to have girly tea sessions or dinners. We always talked about working together or spending more time doing fun things, but we never had the time to actually do it.
Until one day, when Mara went to my office for some renders and I decided to show her my brand new LED hoop. Since that day, Mara has been hooping for 3 years and Ive been doing it for 5.
At that time, hooping was completely unknown here in Mexico and everything had to be learned online. Very small community and no professional hoops anywhere! So when Mara told me she wanted to learn I just taught her the basics and took her with me for our first hooping adventure: A weekend workshop with Brecken Rivara!!! Hoopvention, was México’s first hooping workshop and where many of us met, become hooping friends and started building the community.
How did you come up with the idea of Etereas?
At that same workshop, we had a LED and fire hooping night. Daniela and I sat down with the other girls to watch the lighted hoops and that was it! Brecken was doing ultra cool hoop stuff, we were watching and I said to Daniela “Look at those shapes! We could animate that!!” and she was like “I knowww, I was thinking the exact same thing!”
As animators we are constantly analyzing movement, so each trick we learned or every time we hooped we were visualizing all the shapes and geometric things we could “draw” in the air with the hula hoop. Although a couple of years passed by with the idea on hold, we never stopped thinking about it. We did lots of visual experiments where I would take photos of Daniela and we would analyze her movements while hooping. We draw on those pics our visual discoveries, how the hoop moved, the connections it made with the body, with space, etc.
How did the production start? what was first – did you know it was going to be Tiana and Brecken? Did you start with the music? or the place?
We were sure we had to film this with Brecken! She was there at the beginning and she works a lot with space and the figure 8. It was ment to be! But we had to wait for the right time.
Two years later we had the opportunity to contact Brecken again and show her our idea and our visual experiments. We invited her for a new workshop and ask her to be part of the film. She definitely loved the idea of the project and also recommended us a new friend she had that was into geometric hooping, Tiana Zoumer. That was when we knew we had to use both of them! Tiana had very strong and sharp lines in her hoop moves and the hula hoop interacted a lot with her. And Brecken on the other side, was very soft and round and interacted a lot with the space. They where a perfect combo for our film!
We started with them and our visual research. We made a list of the shapes we wanted to see, the tricks we liked, and the things that represented them as hoopers. We made a storyboard, a shooting list and then we made a huge scouting to find the perfect location. We were very certain of what we wanted. Soft colors, tall ceilings, something really special. It was hard, but we found it!
Music was the last thing we did. We certainly edited and animated against music but it was a different song. Just a reference with a strong beat we liked. We knew since the beginning that the music was going to be original and it had to be very powerful. So at the last phase of the project we had the luck to work with two of the top DJs in the country, Julian Placencia and Teen Flirt! They did such an amazing job! We feel very happy with the results.
How long did it take you to complete your film? What was the most difficult?
It took us nearly three years to finish the film. It was a really big challenge! Every single part was really difficult because a great deal of the project was made by hand. Frame by frame. We also had no budget at all and we did it just for the fun. So we had to seek help from our friends and use our spare time to work. The last six months were really hard. No weekends, no friends, no boyfriends, no family! Just the computers, the hoops and us. You know…the regular animator life but with no breaks, haha. It was a really fun ride though. We wouldn’t change it a bit.
I saw on your website another project featuring Marawa the Amazing. Would you like to say something about this production?
Yes! We absolutely love to work with hoops and every time we do something we have new ideas! Etereas gave us a whole new bunch of ideas we could explore, so we decided to do a new short film with all that in it. This film is going to focus more in the body and we really love Marawa’s moves and her super fun attitude. She really is amazing and adorable! So we shoot the video material last year when she was in the city and we are currently looking for funding for the animation process. Its going to be great! We really want to see it finished very soon!!!
